This series of artwork was exhibited in Memory Smuggler: A First Quartet at To Art House, Hong Kong. In this exhibition, Chu employed quasi-archaeological methods to delve into the settlements and ruins in the hills of Fo Tan. Through her research, she conducted numerous field trips to the mountainous Fo Tan area, exploring remote abandoned villages, interviewing the remaining residents, and collecting artifacts.
One of the key pieces in the exhibition is The Explorer Map, which reflects the areas she navigated during her investigations. Created using tayin (拓印), a traditional Chinese printing technique, the map consolidates various layers of geological and cultural information, such as the locations of residencies and abandoned villages, terrain details, contour lines, and the height of the mountain area.
Chu’s routes through the region are uniquely marked on the map with shattered glass, a material that resonates with the themes and aesthetics of her other works featured in the exhibition.
