Chinese paintings, especially landscape paintings, are often regarded as a projection of the artist's spiritual outlook and worldview. The Daoist school believes that all things arise from the interaction of the two polarities of yin and yang, and this applies to landscapes as well. Both works depict scenes of immortal islands, symbolizing a realm that the hearts yearn for. The two works contain contrasting and complementary elements: square and circle, void and substance, light and dark. Each polarity can serve as an independent depiction of an immortal mountain landscape, or they can break the static opposition to become a unified entity, constructing a complete world. Both works are created using the technique of rubbing, where the image is first carved onto a base plate, and then through multiple methods such as paper transfer and sectioning, the image is replicated onto a single sheet of paper.
